Synopsis Guardians of the Folly

The Bronx swelters in 1962 as newlyweds John and Rosalyn Connors and driver Billy Shea screech to a halt. John enters a deli accepting his share of drug sale money. Later Rosalyn opens gifts in the apartment, as the two hide money from each other.

A pregnant Rosalyn wants reassurance John loves her and she is acceptance by Preston, John’s attorney father. Losing college draft deferments for selling drugs, John and Tyrone plea-bargain with Preston’s help. John joins the Air Force, Tyrone the Army.

The U.S. and Britain monitor UFO activity due to the Cuban Missile Crisis and edge-of-space nuclear testing by the U.S. and Russia. The allies renew efforts to find missing metal from the Roswell crash, an engine and alien corpses. General Tyler U.S.A.F., Alan Higgins of the British Government and Kevin Station of the National Security Agency (NSA) join forces to intensify UFO scrutiny. John returns from Air Force basic training to find Rosalyn and Billy in bed.

John requests assignment in England and is recruited into a clandestine group headed by the man sought in the Roswell theft, a retired U.S.A.F Col. and Hughes ex-employee named Filo Lister. Other members of the group are Clive Ratcliff, an electrician at the airbase, Iris Bentley, Clive’s girlfriend and secretary to the Hospital Commander and Suzanne Hewitt, an aspiring oil painter and photographic model on Carnaby Street.

John orders AF items, falsifies lab reports for pilots and allows his Air Postal Office address to be used by Filo. We see Suzanne, John’s girlfriend under surveillance in a St. John’s Wood flat where Air Force Exchange ration stamps illegally pay rent and Suzanne’s girlfriend assists drug sales by Airman Roosevelt Ladd.

Later, John tends a surgical patient at the hospital Carrie Stennis, the daughter of General Stennis who is intent on raising the hospital preparedness should the Russians invade reform-minded Czechoslovakia. Carrie gives John an LSD-laced postage stamp.

Meanwhile, Clive communicates with the aliens arranging for them to take back their metal strip. This Gravity Accelerated Propulsion (GAP) engine runs on gravity waves leaving no heat trail and using no fuel. It’s the reason the NSA reports to no other agency and is believed by Washington to guarantee U.S. supremacy. Filo tells John to ride with Capt. Joseph Lawson in a jet trainer. If he doesn’t, John’s divorce, marriage to Suzanne and her employment at the Playboy Club are in jeopardy.

We learn that the Air Force blames UFOs for their own nuclear accidents, one of which killed Suzanne’s father. Iris owns the Clay Pigeon Pub and is angry about lights in the sky, Filo’s activities and unpaid rent on a locked attic. Can Filo's arranged flight with John aboard succeed in it mission?

In a phone call from John Suzanne learns their sun holiday is cancelled as John must fly as Filo demanded. She threatens to end the relationship. On their flight John and a Filo picked Joseph are surprised by a UFO and taken aboard. They land and Joseph smuggles the GAP engine out after being forced into a debriefing session.

A year later John shunning Filo, tries to resuscitate a U-2 pilot recovering from surgery. The pilot saw a UFO over Spain but denies going aboard. John who licked the LSD stamp on entering the UFO can’t trust his memory of that event. Filo dies while rumors of a Broken Arrow (nuclear accident) in Palomares, Spain spread. Could the UFO been involved?

Kevin at the U.S. embassy in London spies on British intelligence to learn alien sightings are centered over the Clay Pigeon. Iris now working at the U.S.A.F. Bentwaters Air Base, wires the Clay Pigeon to alarm if entered at Clive’s vicarage in Tunstall near the Woodbridge/Bentwaters airbases.

U.S.A.F. General Tyler interrogates John at the hospital. We learn the aliens use light to carry information, store memory in tiny cards and trigger memory release in humans. John tells of his UFO visit, including an alien posing as Rosalyn who attempts to retrieve the GPA engine which Clive has loaded in a film canister for pickup by the aliens.

John agrees to uncover the Hughes retro-engineered UFO ship and possible GAP engine on hearing that Gen. Stennis died in Spain’s Broken Arrow. Tyler provides John with special orders and the promise of a career as an officer. Tyler takes John’s passport because the British insist on curtailing his travels.

We learn the aliens saw the accident caused by the aerial tanker’s pilot unfold over Palomares and defused falling nuclear bombs with a light beam. John discovers Filo’s lighter in his pocket and believes the GAP engine is inside.

Alan and Kevin enter the Clay Pigeon to learn light causes the properties of the Roswell metal to change. Scalp electrodes found near an antenna dish prove Clive used a computer program to communicate with the aliens. John, Suzanne and Joseph aboard a Hughes transport to fly to Norton A.F.B. in California. John tries to tell her about the GAP engine and the alien saga, but she fears her complicity in recruiting him into the group will be uncovered and stops him. Suzanne phones Iris and learns Clive is attempting to signal the aliens from the Tunstall vicarage steeple where he has rigged yet another antenna dish.

At Big Bear Lake John and Suzanne meet Waldo Simmons, a Hughes pilot who captured UFO data at the Trinity test site during the first atom bomb test. She opens Waldo’s package to read Filo’s NSA file and the GAP engine manual. She discovers the manual is really the 1947 Las Vegas phone directory. John fearing the worst pulls the metal strip from the lighter, but pockets it as Captain Willie Wiz-bang arrives.

They learn of the Captain’s parents and Hughes visits to the ranch, which has never been listed in county records. John learns that Suzanne lied about loving him earlier. Later the estranged couple feels the chalet on the lake shake when an unseen motor starts up and realize their mutual love is still intact. They find a UFO in an underground chamber.

General Tyler and Kevin arrive to surround the conspirators and in a phone call to Alan learn the metal samples are advanced integrated circuits, which change in varying light into different electronic components, but can be interrupted by UV light. UV searchlights at airbases offer a defense to UFO neutralization of nuclear weapons. Alan has Iris at his side during the call and will help control Clive. Could he use an updated computer programs and a Hughes voice-scrambling device to communicate with aliens?

Aerial photos at the Big Bear site suggest a buried pond that might contain alien coffins lost aboard a Hughes charter in 1947. Three humanoids are unearthed; their blood vessels are tiny light carrying tubes. The GAP engine is integrated circuits arranged in metallic layers plus accompanying robots that form a computer network. The strip and Filo’s lighter disappear, as the general is about to examine the metal’s properties.

The UFO and GAP manual are fraudulent; Hughes may have blackmailed the Air Force for contracts. Suzanne will be deported, and if she speaks drug charges in Britain will bring jail. John will complete his service at Clark AFB in the Philippines, tasting the war he avoided by selecting England. The Captain will be judged insane and hospitalize anonymously.

A year later John returns to New York seeing Roosevelt Ladd, now an amputee on his AirVac plane. John in uniform is assaulted in Penn Station by war protestors. Dreaming of aliens and Suzanne, he awakens to a hug from his never seen daughter and thanks Preston for raising her. He sets out for England and the Playboy Club to reunite with Suzanne and is taken by Higgins to Tunstall. The group asks the aliens to visit the vicarage. Higgins discovers Filo’s metal strip is a powerful solar collector gift, which the U.S. wished to utilize as a powerful orbital weapon against communist adversaries.

The U.S.A.F. tramples British sovereignty in Rendlesham Forest to stop the gift’s return but Suzanne returns it. General Tyler insists in Washington that unknown persons have stolen the videotape showing events in the forest but is forced into retirement. The U.S.A.F. Captain who videotaped the Rendlesham visit offers Higgins the missing videotape saying it’s the better American NTS format, not the outdated British PAL format. Higgins holds a small metallic card in his hand which Susanne was given by the aliens saying, "He will muddle through." What does this new alien gift offer for a planet still engaged in military folly and running out of energy?
